Ride Of Silence - POSTPONED!
Ride is postponed Due to Bad weather. We'll publish the new date soon!
Held during National Bike Month, the Ride of Silence raisess awareness to motorists, police & public officials that cyclists have a legal right to public roadways. It also celebrates and honors the lives of cyclists who've been injured or killed while riding on public roadways, and remembers all those are lost in traffic crashes. All traffic deaths are preventable. This is a worldwide event with about 400 rides taking place May 16.
In 2017 two of our local cyclists were killed, joining a list of now 16 cyclists who lost their lives in the Tallahassee metropolitan area since 2001. Steve Reker was out on a training ride along US90 on March 28, when he was struck by car. Only a few days later, Marlene Larmore was struck by a car at Oak Ridge Rd when she was out riding the St Marks trail.
Since 2001, an astonishing total of 1017 people lost their lives on the roads in our four county area, which include 128 pedestrians, and 16 cyclists. We believe all these deaths are preventable with good
infrastructure
and attentive driving. This ride is a ride to remember all those killed on the road, to think about all those that have lost their relatives and friends, and reminds us we all have a
responsibility
to drive and ride with care.
